Ideas to help the Belle City of the Great Lakes Thrive
The area around the Root River have been know by many names throughout the centuries. It was an important hub and hunting ground for the Ho Chunk Nation.
Captain Gilbert Knapp founded the city and named it after himself, a rather self-centered move, if you ask this author.
The city was renamed Racine in a trick of irony. Its nick-name Belle of the Great lakes emerged early in the city's history... No one knows who coined the term, but there are theories.
Names are important to human culture. We all have names, multiple names, some cultures have many, many names. We name everything around us, and we even rename them from time to time. Some names are rare and some are ubiquitous; some are ugly and some are pretty. People who live in Racine and are from Racine LOVE Racine, and I do too, which is why I believe that getting closer to the true name of our city will help us live our city's true.
Ursula K. Le Guin, eat your heart out!
Racine is French for 'root'. This comes from the primordial ecology of the local river, and the observation by the early french explorers that the river had muddy banks with lots of exposed roots. Thus, Racine River, or Root River. And the name has been slung all around the region. Racine county, Racine city, Racine this, Racine that.
Ironically, the only thing not named 'Racine" it the Root river itself!
There is only one Sheboygan, Waunakee (indeed its own slogan), and many other places. There are many places also named with reused names, and we have an
opportunity to add another 'Only City Named This' in the World right here in Wisconsin
Let's change history. Let's turn over a new leaf, let's lean into our uniqueness, let's change the name of our beautiful city to "beautiful city" and call it Belle City. Yeah, in french, Belle means beautiful!
